The goal of the Southeastern Youth Camp has always been to lead unbelieving campers to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and to encourage the believing campers to develop a close relationship with Jesus Christ through the application of the Word of God.
The Southeastern Youth Camp started in 1990 and continues today as an outreach of Doctrinal Studies Bible Church of Birmingham, AL.. Each year campers return and bring their friends where many have come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way. As a result, campers have grown and matured in the Lord and have returned to take on leadership roles in future camps, thereby perpetuating the attendance of more spiritual leaders and raising the age limit at camp. Young people from many states have attended the Southeastern Youth Camp representing Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, Virginia, California, Arkansas and Iowa. Exchange students from Germany and Russia have also attended. There are no restrictions of race, color or creed or physical ability at the Southeastern Youth Camp. In the past, we have had campers who are hearing-impaired and a few others who have been confined to wheelchairs. Therefore, the camp is a “melting pot” of campers from many areas of life. The variation of campers may seem to pose problems but, on the contrary, they make each day challenging and very fulfilling. One week during mid summer constitutes the “usual” camp. However, the Southeastern Youth Camp is not your “usual” or “normal” camp because it has an impact all year round. Campers who have attended the camp become motivated to correspond with friends from camp, while others want to minister to their friends and families at home with truth and love. Many of the campers have returned home to start Bible Studies and other ministries in their communities. Some of the campers even seek to travel on mission trips and a few even join the military to serve this country. Each person attends camp for a reason, not by accident. Because of this, we encourage them to stay connected to our staff and each other through this web site and s-mail. We do our best to keep everyone informed through our newsletter and updates about camps, retreats or trips sponsored by the Southeastern Youth Camp. Many of the return campers take personal responsibility for “new” people they meet at camp and you can read some of their comments about the fulfillment they receive in doing so here. There is an endless list of “ripple effects” that camp has caused among the attendees. However, the best legacy that SEYC could leave is the desire of each person to stay connected to other believers.
Our prayer as directors, is that this phenomenon of reaching out to others will be our legacy.
